Ecofem is a women’s empowerment project and
menstruation is our focus and we make and promote the concept of sustainable menstruation,
and cloth washable pads. I was very happy to be invited to auroville
by Ecofem, to have a chat to the women who work for Ecofem about the fearless tattoo
project. We had women from our whole team, our whole
team actually. From the packing ladies through to myself and the other co founder. The fearless tattoo project is an awareness
campaign that urges women to reign in fear and take control of there lives. I think this topic of fear and how it rules
our lives is absolutely universal, but i think in india there are some really specific aspects
of the ways that women are conditioned, in culture to be afraid, to feel inferior to
men. We see this with our work with menstruation, where this whole idea of being polluted or
dirty is part of the package of what women absorb themselves as menstruators. It awakens women to the fact that a lot of
what might be holding them back, might be gender based fear, gender specific fear. The
project is predominantly about a conversation, we have around this topic. The conversation
often leads to a pledge that the women take to never let fear control their lives anymore,
and this pledge can be taken in the form of a tattoo of the word fearless, in their language
of choice, in their handwriting, on their skin at no cost to them. I think the idea of the tattoo, the way it
was presented as a choice but gives women the sense of really having an opportunity
at least to take a serious reflection on weather they make a kind of promis to themselves to
really take fear seriously. The point of the tattoo, is that they see
it every day and that it becomes a personal mantra and slowly over time it starts to speak
to them and it becomes part of your sikie. This conversation, really open up food for
thought. My sense is this was a start of perhaps a much deeper exploration, but that the women
got the chance to really start to reflect on the invisible ways that they are being
conditioned to be afraid and to be small and to feel inferior.
