Man, when you tell people
you from Cali, all they think is beach,
beautiful women, palm trees. But nah. Where I’m from, man you lucky
to see another day. Compton really like
15 miles away from LA, but it’s two different worlds. My name is KP, everybody knows
me as IAM Compton, and I’m the best tattoo
artists on the west coast. I do ink, art and music, IAM.
I’m a triple threat. I’m a G in my city,
my whole family from Compton, even my girl Kyla Pratt,
child star actress, everybody’s childhood crush, also the mother of my two
beautiful daughters. I’ve been trying to get you
on a track forever. It’s giving me anxiety
even just talk about it. Growing up here, you have to
fight for your respect. Trying to navigate
through the gangs, at school you damn near
had to choose a side. But I always knew
I wanted more. So I was focused on football,
got a little scholarship, went off to college,
but I (beep) up. Got caught with enough drugs
to make me lose my scholarship. Ended up back in Compton.
Yeah, I hit rock bottom. But I knew I had
more to accomplish. So I figured out,
let me use my gift. I’ve been drawing forever. So I picked up a tattoo gun
instead of a real gun. I took my talents all through
the hood, Compton, riots, LA, gangsters,
strippers, essays, Bloods, Crips, I don’t discriminate.
You got green? Hey, let’s get with it.
Before you know it, I’m in the hills
and tatting the Puff, NAS, Kelly Rowland,
Taraji, Lil Uzi. But at a certain point,
even though I feel like I had the world
at my fingertips, I realized I got way
more to accomplish. People in Compton need a place
to get away from the gangs, the guns and the violence. And I want to create
that space for my city. I’m on a mission. Oh how you doing? Appreciate you all coming out.
How you doing? You alright? What up fam?
Today, we making history. I’m about to tell
the whole community I’m opening the first
tattoo shop in Compton. Super dope, we need
you out here, we need you. Make it happen. Main purpose of is to show
the young brothers and sisters, they don’t have to
take the street route. Yo. What up bro? What up man? I’m coming down here to turn up. I’m trying to be
that new king of Compton, you hear what I’m saying?
Hey man [inaudible 00:03:20] daddy right here. I’m Lemeir. I’m one of the best tattoo
artists out this mother (beep). Hold up. I’m tattooing people
like Megan Good, Allyson Felix, Deandre Hopkins.
Can’t nobody (beep) with me. I started selling drugs
when I was 13. My whole family
in the streets. My dad in jail right now
because he murdered somebody. I saw it all. I saw my (beep) people get shot
right in front of me. I then got set up myself,
gun to my head over a (beep) Rolex. My life had to change.
So when I found tattooing, I felt the answer that
this (beep) saved my life. They could pull me away
from all this (beep). I’m going to be the first one
with a celebrity in the shop. Oh, is that what you think?
What celebrity you bringing? I don’t know. I’m bringing my damn self. She’s over there turned. My name is Vudu Dahl.
I do erotic art. When KP asked me to be his
apprentice at his new shop, I was like (beep) yeah. Chug chug chug. I’m definitely the life
of the party. I’m a little wild.
Yes. I grew up very sheltered. My stepfather was
the leader of a cult. I wasn’t allowed
to have any friends. There was no TV,
no literature, and when I left it was
the most liberating thing that I could have
ever experienced. As soon as I got out,
I was like, yes, like I’m this like wild,
fun loving person and now that
I’ve become myself, I guess like people
would consider me sexualized. Like I love to model,
I love to be naked. It’s fun for me. Okay Drip. What’s up, I’m CT, AKA
Ink Drippin. I’m a tattoo artist
from Compton, California. I’ve been tattooing
for about two years, but I’m a natural,
you know what I’m saying? So I can buck
with the best of them. You know, drip about
to pull up with 12 girls. Man, that’s all he likes. My guy. Just giving it light. This my lady Anika, Bianca,
Sharday. You got a dance crew? Man, you know how we do. Me and KP, we go way back.
That’s the big homie. Somebody I’ve been looking up
to in the game for a long time, doing the right things
in the streets of Compton and he hit me
with the opportunity. He asked me if I wanted
to be on board with the new tattoo shop. I said, hell yeah,
let’s get it cracking. Yo. Yo what’s up? Your missing the party.
Your missing the party. Who’s all there? All of us. Hey don’t listen, don’t listen
to Tim, he’s drunk, that’s not good. You know we all got a cap
on the mirror sometimes. You know Danielle be blowing
his line all day long like where you at? What you doing
when you coming home? I’m watching him sis,
he’s not doing nothing. My name is Barbie. I’m a very long
time friend of KP. I’ve got you.
I’m definitely always watching, keeping the little hoes
away from my boy. My name isn’t Barbie
for no reason, okay? I’ve known KP
since our days in college. He was a top football player, I was a cheerleader
and we just vibe. He knew he could talk to me,
not be judged and I definitely was never
trying to (beep) him. Enjoy yourself,
have fun, turn up, and I will be seeing
you at the shop. Tim. My name is Tim. I represent my cousin IAM
Compton. I’m his right hand man.
I’m his manager and I do it all. Me and KP, we go back. I’m talking about back,
back, back, back, back. I remember the first time I walked out
on a football field. I seen him out there balling,
running past everybody. We had been through riots. We had been through shootouts,
but we never gave up. We kept pushing each other. We always had a dream that we
could open up this tattoo shop. Oh, what did we just walk into? Barbie, hi. Oh, she is lit. Lit lit. She’s about to get lit
right now. I’m sober, excuse me. Let her go, let her go. Hey look at the numbers,
look at the numbers. Let’s go. Let her go, let her go.
It’s over, it’s over. My crew love to turn up
in a party. But at the end of the day,
we’re going to light the whole city up with this art.
Yeah, see. We’re more than just gangs
and violence like we been on the map. We’re about to let
the whole world know what this city really about. Listen, we did (beep)
until the sun come down. Until the sun come down,
we out of here. Isn’t no Compton (beep)
like (beep) this. Man. We out here. But you, you the (beep) bro,
like this (beep) would never be possible
without your determination. And I also (beep)
these young (beep), they’re ready
to kill for you, bro. I want you to really
understand that bro. You the reason why I’m here.
You feel me? Because without you bro,
I’m not (beep), you feel me? I respect the fact that you
believed in my dream and helped me get this far
and keep going. Having somebody like KP
to look up to, not having a pops
or no (beep) like that. He did what a big brother
would do. He let me know
like you (beep) up or, you aren’t doing it right
or this is how we should do it. So hanging out with him, I feel like we
accomplishing something by bringing something positive
to the city of Compton. That (beep) right there,
he brings tears to my eyes. (beep).
