Today we have an opportunity to talk to a art director – the one who’s behind the music industry Bodyslam, Silly Fools, Room 39. This person can create different styles of work. Today I’m with a celebrity who works behind the scenes and I’m pretty sure people in the graphic industry would know him as Peng. Nice to meet you. A lot of Thailand’s rock band’s posters, graphic or even concerts are designed by him. And he is Thailand’s favorite director. Is this your daughter? Hi If your daughter wants to get a tattoo would you let her? Yesterday she told me “Dad I want a full body tattoo”. Oh ok I didn’t think it would be that soon. So if your daughter wants to get a tattoo right now would you say she’s ready or would she have to wait? She should be older than 20 years old since her body isn’t developed yet, not until 20 when her body is fully developed. I’ve noticed these days most tattoo shops don’t let kids under 20 get tattoos as well. I feel like a lot of people who’s not in the graphic industry is curious of what you do since our viewers are interested in tattoos and they wanna know more about you especially because you’re covered in tattoos, yet you’re really successful. Tell us about you With my work, I have a lot of titles. I’m mainly a Art Director, Creative Director focusing in the music industry like album covers, key visual posters for concerts, sometimes I take care of the entire concert. For example last year I did Silly Fool’s entire concert, Room 39’s concert screen visuals and a stage at Big Mountain’s music festival. Wow you’ve done so many projects! Yeah I just keep doing it cause I enjoy working on them. You have so many tattoos to be honest I’ve been saying this a lot but I want tattoos that go all the way down to my hands and all the way up my neck like yours this is literally my dream. What style of tattoos do you like? My body is mixed with every type of styles such as tribal, old school , new school Japanese, basically everything. Theres no specific style and I don’t really focus on the meaning of the tattoos I just get whatever I like during that time. For example in this piece it’s my favorite artist’s drawing. So I emailed him saying if I could get his drawing piece and have it tattooed on me. I didn’t really ask for permission, I was just letting him know. Or like back then I liked stars so I had stars tattooed or if I liked tribal, tribal is definitely getting tattooed. There’s no meaning to it. If like it I’ll get it tattooed. I just feel like these tattoos are the feelings, reminders- memories of what has happened during that time. I don’t see getting a tattoo as my life has to be meaningful with deep tattoos I see it more as back then what I liked I’d have it tattooed on me. Do you have any tattoos that have a meaning? This is a heart with a hourglass running out of time. This to me means that time is running out and that we don’t have that much time in life. Whatever I want to do I should quickly get it done. Since we don’t have that much time. My neck tattoos are portraits of my Mother and Father. This side is my Mother and this side is my Father. At first, the portraits were very accurately drawn, it looked too much like them so I told the artist to make it not that accurate because my parents didn’t allow me to get a neck tattoo. So I told them I’ll get a portrait of them so they’d let me. So this is your Mother and I also see a bird. This also has no meanings.I didn’t want just a portrait. I wanted a portrait with an animal because it’s weird and different. This piece looks old school but the details aren’t old school. The color technique makes it look newer and with old school style of drawing. Yeah the face doesn’t look old school. This side is my father and a beetle. Once again, no reasons behind it. I have a lot of people tattooed on me. I feel like tattoo artists are suited with different designs and styles. Sometimes, I go to Chiang Mai and I meet a tattoo artist, I’m like hi since we’re close can you please tattoo me. Do you check their skills first? Yes, I do. What is your first tattoo? My first tattoo has been covered. It goes around my leg. I had it tattooed back when I was in university. Did you get it covered up because it was ugly? It’s been ten years and it has faded and thinned out. So I asked another artist to do a free- hand cover up piece for me. When you go meet customers, or the elders Do you feel uncomfortable or like does it feel like they think you’re not trust worthy? Yes, in the beginning they were like that but I understand them. So I focused on my work and once they know that I do art, they wouldn’t be that tight about it. Back then, were your parents mad about it? They didn’t let me get tattoos so I’d have to wear long pants at home and hide my tattoos from them. And my Dad has good eyesight. He was like ” what is this?” Oops I got a tattoo. Surprisingly he wasn’t mad about it cause I’ve been asking him since middle school and he wouldn’t let me. So when I was in university I went for it. If I asked for permission I knew he wouldn’t let me. So after that he’s okay with it? He just says don’t get any more tattoos, but I keep getting more and He’d ask me if I’ve gotten more tattoos done I’d be like nah Dad you forgot or Mom you forgot, I’ve had this ages ago. Do you think deep down they know? Yeah probably. They’re just playing along. When you go outside to eat, shop or walk around do you think people stare at you? Yes, but I don’t really care. I feel like some people look at you because they’re like oh this guy has nice tattoos. Nah sometimes they stare at me because they think I’m scary. I’ve noticed that with people who’s covered in tattoos, and they get on public transportation, people would be scared to sit next to them. Like when I sit on the sky train, the two seats next to me would be vacant. So now whenever I’m on public transportation, I’ve decided to stand so at least theres 3 vacant seats for people to sit. I mean I understand them like if I see someone who’s covered in tattoos I would be scared to sit next to them too. Was it hard to flirt with your Girlfriend? Nah that was easy, but the day I had to go to her home and meet her parents was hard. I went to Chiang Mai during Songkran festival and I had to wear a suit. Since back then my hands weren’t tattooed yet. Cause I was scared of them seeing my tattoos since her family is more traditional so I had to wear a suit and cover everything. Back then, my neck wasn’t tattooed. I had to enter her house sweating in the hot weather during Songkran festival. Long pants and Long shirt just to go greet her parents. When we were eating, I’d be wearing a long sleeve shirt and I couldn’t move that much or my tattoos would peep through. So I’d carefully eat I had to live like that for a while until I had a chance to let them know I have tattoos. That was probably the best time to let them know because it was when I was going to be ordained as a monk. I took my clothes off and according to my girlfriend she said that my parents saw and was like woahhhh They asked if I had them done for a while now and they can’t say anything about it now because I’m a monk. -safe- Before they saw your tattoos, they got to know you as a person. Yes they knew who I am as a person before my outer appearance and then I let them know later. Peng has one style cause Peng likes the artworks that are perfect because he gives ideas to the tattoo artists and the rest, he lets the tattoo artist create the piece to match his style. Peng has pretty tattoos. Since you’re a Art Director, you must have a tattoo that you’ve designed. Nope. I do not have one. Oh haha. Do you not want a piece of your own idea on your body? It’s more like I just guide the artist and let them know what I want. Like this piece is done by a female artist. I told her I want a piece that is just filled in with black ink but this piece is not done yet cause it hurts. Which tattoo is your favorite? My Mother’s face because it is a ‘family’ piece. Since my parents don’t like any of my tattoos except this one. Where my parents are bragging to other people that I have their face tattooed on me. I just found out you can flex on other people about tattoos. They probably liked it a lot. Peng, I believe that you’re an idol to a lot of people who want to do things they love and be 100% themself without hiding anything. Do you have anything to say to them? For people who have tattoos, ( people who don’t have tattoos might not understand) Personally I don’t like to the term ” people with tattoos are not bad people, and that there are a lot of bad people without tattoos”. I feel like this term shouldn’t even be said. If you think about getting a tattoo, or have a tattoo you shouldn’t care about other people’s opinions or what they say. Don’t get hurt about it and then view yourself as a bad person. If you’re not mentally strong enough or you’re not ready, don’t get a tattoo. If think about getting a tattoo, you should be like ” yeah I got a tattoo” The society is gonna view it as a bad thing, and that’s normal. But a tattoo affects your life more than other people’s words. Don’t stress over it. Like my sky train- public transportation story people don’t want to sit next to me. If you think about the other side, I was walking with my friends and all of them is covered in tattoos, my acquaintance said wow my friend group is scary especially when we walk together in a group. Yeah that made realize if I walked pass a group of people who are tattooed up, I’d be scared of them as well. Even if I’m covered in tattoos, I’d still be scared. So don’t stress about it. True. I liked how you said that if you already got a tattoo, don’t stress or think about other people’s opinion because you have to be confident that you are physically and mentally ready. Once you’re ready and decide to get a tattoo, you wouldn’t worry about it. But if you’re not ready, then don’t do it. You’d also have to be ready financially. If you don’t have enough money and you go to a not that skilled tattoo artist, and their work isn’t that good, I think thats the problem. If you notice, the first few tattoos, people get when they are younger are usually a disaster. I believe that if you save up and wait and don’t rush it because it’s gonna be there forever. It’s not like buying clothes, if you like it you buy it. Think about it throughly, A lot of people ask me about this as well, they want to get a tattoo, but the price is too high for them with good tattoo artists. Then wait because tattoos are permanent. Oh yeah one time, a kid asked me if I wanted a tattoo from him, he’d charge me 300 Baht. 300 Baht??????? He was like one design 300 baht. Bye. No thank you. Peng is someone who is extremely successful in his field of work and he loves his tattoos and is not bothered by other people’s opinion on his tattoos. Therefore, like Peng, don’t judge other people on their appearance because it’s just what’s on the outside. You don’t know their personality or how much skills they have you can never judge someone from their appearance.
